Spiders can sneak into houses through the tiniest of cracks and cause a lot of nuisance. Experts at End of Tenancy Cleaning have shared their top tips for deterring spiders – for free or for extremely low prices.

One of the “best options” to deter spiders, according to the experts at End of Tenancy Cleaning, is to use peppermint oil.

This ingredient costs £1.98 in supermarkets and has been scientifically proven to repel spiders.

This is because spiders smell using their legs, and so as soon as they are hit with the overpowering scent of peppermint, they will immediately flee.

The experts recommended mixing peppermint oil with water in a spray bottle and then spraying the areas of the home that are most susceptible to spiders.

Using citrus fruits is another fail proof, cheap method to deter spiders, costing only 30p.

Citrus, like peppermint, has a strong repellent effect on spiders.

All households need to do is mix freshly squeezed lemon juice with water and spray the mixture around the home to keep the spiders at bay.

Wiping orange peels on windows and doorways is another “effective, low-cost” method to deter them, according to the experts.

Another top tip to deter spiders is to light candles.

This can get rid of the pests because they don’t like the smells of lemon, cinnamon, and citronella.

A pack of small candles can cost £1.60, or less, and they can be placed o window sills and near potential spider entrances, such as cracks.

It is, however, worth filling in any cracks in the home – such as the ones under doors and around windows.

Make sure window frames are properly sealed and try installing excluder strips at the bottoms of doors.
